Pure Omega3 Means No Additives, No Contaminants – Just Naturally Effective Fish Oil

Why seek pure omega3 oil? If you’re concerned about your health, you will want to make sure you get an omega3 supplement that is free from additives and free from contaminants. But not all supplements fulfil these criteria – despite what they might claim on the label.

Pure omega3 fish oil supplements should contain nothing but fish oil and some natural antioxidants, such as rosemary extract and broad spectrum natural vitamin E oil (tocopherol) to act as a preservative. The ingredients don’t need to be any more exotic than that and you should be suspicious of any omega-3 supplement marketed as ‘pure’ that includes any extra ingredients.

In terms of contaminants, it’s an unfortunate fact that many fish species are caught in waters contaminated by PCBs, heavy metals and dioxins. Oily species, such as salmon, mackerel and tuna, are particularly likely to contain such toxic substances because they are high up the food chain. Unfortunately, they are also the species you need to eat to get a good dose of omega 3 fatty acids.

Manufacturers of fish oil supplements must therefore put their product through exhaustive purifying and filtering processes to arrive at something that can be called pure.

But it is possible to find supplements that are naturally low in contaminants. These will use the fish species hoki, which is caught wild in the clean waters of the Southern Ocean, off the coast of New Zealand. Any lingering contaminants can then be removed by the sophisticated process of molecular distillation, guaranteeing a product that is genuinely pure omega3.

Purity can also refer to the amount of the omega 3 fatty acid DHA contained in each soft gel of fish oil. DHA is the most important of these essential fatty acids and is beneficial for the heart, brain and circulation. The better quality the product, the higher the concentration of DHA.

So when looking for pure omega3 oil, make sure you get a supplement that has been tested for its purity and freshness, that states its ingredients up front and that publishes proof of its lack of contamination.
