Although benefits have been seen in acne and the psychological problems caused by it, the researchers believe there is a need for “controlled trials”. As people wait on those trials, they can either continue to suffer or start taking the supplements on their own.
If more people knew about the health benefits associated with specific vitamins and other nutrients, the population might be healthier, in general. But, maybe, that’s not what the doctors want.
If we all ate right, got plenty of exercise and took some good nutritional supplements on a regular basis, the number of times that we visited our doctors might decrease. Thinking about it from a purely economical standpoint, that’s not good for business.
No businessman would try to keep customers from coming back. So, maybe doctors don’t really care if we are healthy or not.
The pharmaceutical companies are certainly not interested in conducting trials concerning fish oil and anxiety. Why would people buy expensive anti-anxiety meds when a $16 bottle of fish oil would do the same thing?
So, the bottom line is that there probably will never be any controlled trials. There is simply no where to turn for funding. The small studies will continue to go on and researchers will continue to report about the positive results. But, it won’t be enough to convince the mainstream medical community. They’ll want more studies. But, we already have a lot to read about.
In one of the studies concerning fish oil and anxiety, researchers found that omega-3 fatty acids cause changes in the brain similar to what found with anti-depressant usage. Another review, conducted in Spain, outlined a treatment plan for the management of anxiety and personality disorder. One of their suggestions was the omega-3 fatty acid supplementation.
According to the Global Neuroscience Initiative Foundation (GNIF) in Los Angeles, CA, at least 26% of the American population suffers from some sort of mental disorder. The actual percentage may be higher, because some cases go unreported for many years.
There is a huge difference between the number of cases in the US and the number in China. Only 4% of the Chinese population suffers from a mental disorder. According to the GNIF, the reason for this difference may be a lack of nutrients in the American diet.
GNIF concludes that there is plenty of evidence concerning supplementation with fish oil and anxiety reduction. They also recommend other nutritional supplements, especially for patients that are bothered by the unwanted side effects of psychoactive medications.
Make no mistake about it. If you’re convinced that supplementation is a good idea, be sure to do a little comparative shopping. The amount of omega-3s in the supplements varies greatly, as does the EPA and DHA content. In studies concerning fish oil and anxiety, the higher the DHA content, the better the results.
