Antioxidants are substances that protect the cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. These substances are easily found in fruits and vegetables, and a wide range of culinary and medicinal herbs. The antioxidants which are artificially produced mixing chemicals in the labs are known as synthetic antioxidants. The popular antioxidants are vitamins, minerals and lycopene. Antioxidants have a wide range of health benefits and they the benefit the skin too, in a great way.

The antioxidants function by inactivating the harmful chain reactions of the body like DNA mutation and carcinogen formation. Others keep the body in sound health by keeping the organs like brain, heart, eyes and skin good condition.  Antioxidants are often packed with vitamins, especially vitamin E and Vitamin C. In a combination with these vitamins, the antioxidants contribute in anti ageing. For anti ageing, AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) are another group of antioxidants.

Some of the foods rich in antioxidants are pomegranate juice, acai juice, green tea, grape seed, seaweed, garlic and milk. Fruits like apples, pears and berries, and vegetables like onion and spinach also store enough of these wonder substances. Antioxidants are known to lower the chances of serious diseases and disorders of the heart, and diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer. In the medical industry, antioxidants find an extensive use.

For example, they are used as bone cements. They are also used in making adhesives used in surgeries. In the manufacturing industry, these find use as food packaging materials. Often, some antioxidants, particularly butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole are used as food additives for preventing food discoloration or flavor changes from sweet to rancid. In other words, these are used to maintain the freshness of the foods for a longer time.
